Martin Berinbaum - Institute Director

Professor Martin Berinbaum was born in Philadelphia, but spent his first 18 years in Bakersfield. His mother and father were business owners in Bakersfield for over 40 years. Shortly after graduating from USC School of Music in 1966 in Music Education, he toured Europe and the Middle East for several weeks with the Roger Wagner Chorale and orchestra. It was this tour and friendships that grew from the tour that cemented his desire to follow a career path into music performance.

In 1966, he joined the Army and was assigned to the band at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point where he served until 1969 when he began his studies at Julliard School in New York City. While at Julliard, he studied with William Vachiano and Robert Nagel. In the summers he attended and studied at the Tanglewood and Aspen festivals. In 1972 he performed two very successful debut concerts at Carnegie Recital Hall that launched his career in New York City as a freelance trumpet soloist. In New York City, Martin worked with the well known conductor and organist, Johannes Somary.

Mr. Berinbaum has since performed with over 75 orchestras around the world. He toured and recorded extensively with the trumpet and organ duo Toccatas and Flourishes playing over 850 concerts in North America. One of Toccatas and Flourishes earliest concerts was at the Kennedy Center for the inauguration of President Carter. Martin has recorded for Columbia, RCA, CBC in addition to Klavier and Vanguard.

In 1976 he and his wife, Penelope, moved to Vancouver, B.C. where Martin took up the post of Professor of Trumpet and Director of Bands. The combination of the University position and the opportunity to tour extensively has been very satisfying professionally and personally. He has also toured in China, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Italy and Canada. Mr. Berinbaum maintains an active performing and conducting schedule and is the Director of the University of British Columbia's Summer Music Institute. Martin and Penelope have two children, Matthew and Rebecca.
